Central Maine Power and Town of Islesboro Sign Agreement to Move Broadband Project Forward
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AUGUSTA, Maine, August 14, 2017 A project to provide faster internet service for homes and businesses on Islesboro has reached another milestone. Central Maine Power Co. (CMP), a subsidiary of AVANGRID Inc. (NYSE: AGR), and the Town of Islesboro have signed an agreement for use of a fiber optic line installed in 2016 as part of an upgrade to the island's electric service.
CMP President and CEO Sara J. Burns noted that the agreement reflects the energy company's strong commitment to being a good corporate neighbor.
"We feel our responsibility to communities we serve goes beyond providing reliable electric service, she said. "We are happy to help people and businesses on Islesboro get the broadband service they need to remain a viable year-round community."
CMP installed a new three-mile undersea cable to serve the Penobscot Bay island community in 2016. As the energy company was planning the upgrade, Islesboro officials asked if a fiber optic line could be added to support the town's efforts to improve internet service on the island. Since then, Island property owners approved a $3.8 million bond to design and build the network. Construction is under way, and the first customers are expected to be connected this fall.
"We are delighted with CMP's cooperation in providing our community with access to their fiber currently crossing Penobscot Bay,said Islesboro Town Manager Janet Anderson. "This timely and affordable solution allows us to quickly complete our broadband Internet system."
Maine Public Advocate Barry Hobbins pointed out that the state needs to continue building upon the progress it has made in recent years expanding access to broadband.
"Broadband is critical for economic development, education, and everyday tasks like banking and shopping, and the Office of the Public Advocate is committed to supporting the continued expansion of this service, he said. "Projects like this one "where communities work with companies like Central Maine Power to upgrade infrastructure " are critical to creating the 21st Century communications infrastructure Maine needs to create a more vibrant economy."
