Central Maine Power Breaks Ground on Energy Grid Upgrade in South China
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Augusta, Maine, July 14, 2016 Central Maine Power Co., a subsidiary of AVANGRID Inc. (NYSE: AGR), has started construction on a project that will strengthen the grid serving parts of Kennebec and Waldo Counties. The $5.4 million South China Substation project -- which will benefit homes and businesses in China, Palermo, Windsor, Liberty, Freedom, and Vassalboro -- represents part of an estimated $40 million CMP plans to invest in the energy grid in 2016.
The existing South China substation and the energy grid that operated out of it have served the area well for many years, said Gail Rice, spokesperson for Central Maine Power. "Over time, there has been considerable residential and commercial growth in these communities northeast of Augusta, and these upgrades will allow us to keep providing safe, reliable service many years into the future."
The new South China Substation will be built on a 1.6-acre lot on Route 3 across from the South China post office. It will include a new 34.5/12.47 kilovolt transformer; multiple breakers and switches; and a control house with state-of-the-art communications, protection, and control equipment. Additionally, CMP will add a second distribution circuit, which should help to make service more reliable and provide CMP with more flexibility for operating the energy grid.
CMP expects to put the new substation into service in December, after which it will decommission the existing facility on nearby Windsor Road.
