Power Line Work Will Affect Traffic on Maine Turnpike in Auburn Overnight June 1 to 2

CMP Project Will Enhance Reliability of Grid

AUGUSTA, Maine, May 30, 2014 " Contractors for Central Maine Power Company (CMP), a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, will perform maintenance on transmission lines over Interstate 95 in Auburn as part of the Maine Power Reliability Program (MPRP). The work will require I-95 to be closed to traffic briefly during the overnight hours between late Sunday, June 1, and early Monday, June 2

The work will require disruption of traffic for 15 minute between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. CMP has been coordinating the work with the Maine Turnpike Authority and Maine State Police. State troopers and other personnel will be on site each night to oversee public safety. Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes if possible.

"Traffic needs to be stopped in both directions in order for this work to be done safely," said Gail Rice, CMP spokesperson. "We have scheduled this work for the overnight hours to minimize disruption, and appreciate motorists" patience and flexibility."

The MPRP will ensure the long-term reliability of CMP's bulk power system. The project includes the construction of four new 345-kilovolt substations and one new 115-kilovolt substation and related facilities linked by approximately 440 miles of new transmission lines. The new facilities will reinforce the backbone of the company's 40-year-old bulk power system and create greater capacity for the integration of new generation in the New England region. The MPRP is the largest construction project ever undertaken in Maine. More than 2,700 people are employed directly in the construction, and a 2009 economic impact study projected that the construction spending would generate as many as 900 more jobs through indirect and induced employment. Begun in September of 2010, the first new 345,000 volt substation will be energized later this year. The company expects to complete construction in mid-2015.
