1,000 CMP Employees Celebrate Company's 125th Anniversary (B/ROLL)

Company-wide celebration included Open House with community and business leaders and delivery donation of one ton of food through radio station 92 Moose’s Camp Out Hunger event

Augusta, ME —November 8, 2024 – Today, more than 1,000 Central Maine Power (CMP) employees will conclude a week-long celebration of the 125th Anniversary of the company’s founding.

Central Maine Power was founded as the Oakland Electric Company by Walter Wyman on November 7, 1899. To mark this milestone, CMP employees coordinated several events throughout the week, including a food drive to benefit the Salvation Army through 92 Moose’s Camp Out Hunger event. CMP employees donated more than 2,000 pounds of food, far exceeding their goal.

CMP also opened its doors on Thursday to local elected officials, community and business leaders, and dozens of CMP retirees for a 125th Anniversary Open House. The event included hands-on demonstrations including a display of the latest steel poles being installed on CMP’s transmission system, an opportunity to ride in a bucket truck and a demonstration of CMP’s Energy Manager app feature. Each display was designed to showcase the work CMP and its employees do to deliver safe, reliable electric service to customers across Maine.

“This anniversary celebrates the commitment and service that has been at the core of CMP for its 125-year history,” said Pedro Azagra, Avangrid CEO. “CMP today is at the center of the energy transition, investing in a stronger, smarter grid for Maine’s communities.

“Even though we’ve grown a lot in our 125 years, we are very much a neighborhood company,” said Joe Purington, CEO of Central Maine Power. “Our employees are committed to our communities, making sure families and businesses have safe, reliable power each and every day. I could not be prouder or more grateful for their service to Maine and the service of the generations of Mainers who preceded them here at CMP.”
