B/Roll: New Substation Serving CMP Customers in Biddeford
Facility will support Biddeford’s growing downtown and surrounding communities
Biddeford, ME — September 26, 2024 — Last week, CMP’s new Biddeford Pump Substation began delivering power to more than 3,500 customers in Biddeford, including portions of the city’s downtown and surrounding neighborhoods. The facility gets its name from its proximity to a local water pumping station.
CMP’s work on this project included installing new transformer equipment to prevent summer overloading when electricity demand can be at its highest. Construction teams also increased storm reliability for customers fed from this substation by adding backup pathways for power to reach customers. Efforts to control local erosion and preserve the water quality of the Saco River were also incorporated into this work. All of these upgrades will better support Biddeford’s fast-growing
city center and minimize electricity interruption.
Across CMP’s system, there are more than 22 transmission and substation projects planned or under construction as the company continues to build a smarter, stronger, more resilient grid for its customers.
“This substation will ensure Biddeford is ready to grow and succeed well into the coming decades,” said Biddeford Mayor Martin Grohman. “It adds resilience to our grid, lets us incorporate more renewable energy, and overall, is one more advantage for Biddeford, having 21st Century power infrastructure in place.”
“York County is one of the fastest-growing communities within CMPs service area,” said Adam Desrosiers, Vice President of Electric Operations for CMP. “This new substation upgrade will provide members of the Biddeford community with more reliable power as the regional demand for electricity continues to grow.”
Staff and officials from the City of Biddeford, Biddeford and Saco Chamber of Commerce and Industry and members of the CMP project team recently toured the substation. Below is a link to downloadable video of the facility and site tour that news media may use rights-free:
