Central Maine Power Reaches New Milestone for Paperless Billing

AUGUSTA, Maine, August 5, 2014 " Central Maine Power Co. (CMP), a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, has reached a new milestone for its electronic billing service. This summer, enrollment in CMP's eBill program surpassed 30 percent of customers. Customers can view and pay their CMP bills online and set up automatic monthly payments using this secure, paperless payment option.

"Our 30 percent enrollment in our eBill service clearly demonstrates our commitment to paperless billing as a secure and convenient option for customers, and it's good for the environment," said CMP President and CEO Sara Burns. "Our customers appreciate having more choices to manage their accounts, and everyone wins when we can reduce environmental impacts by mailing out fewer paper bills."

Customers who enroll in eBill can set up e-mail reminders to let them know when their payment is due. They can log in and make a payment at their convenience, or they can sign up for automatic monthly payments that deduct the amount due from the account of their choice. The secure system stores 12 months of bills and usage data, and offers customers the option to print a paper copy for their records.

CMP's eBill is one of many sustainability initiatives under way at the utility. The company reduced its mileage by 2 million miles per year, cut fossil fuel use, and eliminated 1,400 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually by installing more than 600,000 smart meters throughout Maine. CMP's Energy Manager program, enabled by smart meters, allows customers to view their energy use and find ways to use energy more efficiently. More than 25,000 customers have enrolled in the Energy Manager program and that number continues to grow. Under the terms of its newly approved rate agreement, the company will work with Efficiency Maine Trust to promote energy efficiency and conservation programs to customers.

CMP has also incorporated fuel-efficient vehicles, including many hybrids, into its fleet. The company has a long history of recycling everything from paper waste, office supplies, and computers to the oil used in vehicles and electrical equipment. The utility also works to protect wildlife by relocating osprey nests from its utility poles to more suitable nesting platforms nearby.

Customers who wish to sign up for eBill can do so at CMP's web site: www.cmpco.com.
