CMP Announces Work Complete at Rebuilt Forest Ave. Substation

This significant project ensures Greater Portland can continue to grow while improving reliability for CMP customers.

Augusta, ME — August 27, 2024 – Central Maine Power (CMP) has officially completed all construction and landscaping at its newly rebuilt substation on Forest Avenue in Portland that serves approximately 5,000 customers in the Marginal Way area, including parts of Maine Medical Center.

The project replaced a 50-year-old substation and expanded the facility’s footprint and capacity to serve increased electricity demand on the Portland Peninsula. New technology that will communicate more information and enable greater electric system visibility to CMP’s Energy Control Center was also installed.

“As Portland grows and drives Southern Maine’s economy, investments in fundamental infrastructure like the region’s electricity grid give us a solid foundation to support our success and pursue more climate change solutions,” said Portland Mayor, Mark Dion. “This substation is an example of that important work now benefiting our city’s residents, workers and visitors.”

“Each substation is an important part of our grid, connecting the electricity from our transmission system to our customers’ homes,” said Adam Desrosiers, Vice President of Electric Operations for CMP. “Some of these sites, like this one at Forest Avenue, also support the businesses and medical care facilities that thousands of Mainers rely on each day. We’re extremely proud of the work that went into completing this project, and we’d like to thank the City of Portland for its partnership throughout the course of construction.”

Electrification is one of the best tools to fight climate change, and as demand for electricity in the Greater Portland continues grows, CMP will continue to prioritize the delivery of safe, reliable power to customers.
