CMP-Sponsored Service Dog Learning Valuable Skills
Edison, the service dog whose training CMP sponsored in 2023, is expected to be placed in a home in fall 2024.
AUGUSTA, ME — January 31, 2024 — By the end of this year, Edison, the service dog whose training CMP sponsored in 2023 through Mission Working Dogs, is expected to be a full-time partner helping a Maine family with daily tasks.
This January, CMP staff checked in on Edison’s progress during a visit to Mission Working Dogs’ facility in Oxford, Maine.
Right now, Edison is a little more than a year old and is in the middle of a two-year training program that he must complete before he is placed with a family.
The skills he is currently learning include: turning on and off lights, finding and retrieving items from a table, carrying groceries and opening a refrigerator.
“It is truly incredible to see how far Edison has come in roughly one year,” said Amy Marston, Director of Community Relations for Central Maine Power. “We are beyond happy about this partnership, look forward to the difference Edison will make in someone’s life and are considering sponsoring training for another service dog through this program in the near future.”
The person with whom Edison will be placed is still being determined by Mission Working Dogs.
Once that person is selected, they will stay at the Mission Working Dogs facility for a period of time to learn to work and bond with Edison.
